Diet and Oral Hygiene: Oral Health
in a Nineteenth Century Asylum for the Mental Ill.

Abstract: This study examines the inmate oral
health of the nineteenth century Oneida Asylum for the Mentally Ill, NY,
USA. The study reports the skeletal sample with a DMI (Diseased and
Missing Tooth Index) of 70.1, the highest reported from this period.
Diet alone cannot be used to explain the observed patterns since the
asylum diet was based on the general population’s diet. No form of oral
hygiene was practiced at the Oneida Asylum while personal and
professional oral hygiene was practiced in America in this period. This
difference in oral hygiene is used to explain the poor oral health
observed in the Oneida Asylum sample.

Resumen: Este estudio examina la salud oral interna del Asilo
para enfermos mentales Oneida de el siglo XIX en New York, U.S.A. El
estudio reporta una muestra ósea con un D.M.I. (índice de enfermedad y
pérdida dental) de 70.1, el más alto reportado para este período. La
dieta solamente no se puede utilizada para explicar los patrones
observados puesto que la dieta del asilo fue basada en la dieta de la
población en general. No se practicó ninguna forma de higiene oral en el
Asilo de Oneida, mientras que la higiene oral personal y profesional fue
practicada en América en este período. Esta diferencia en higiene oral
se utiliza para explicar la mala salud oral observada en la muestra del
Asilo de Oneida.
