Abstract: One of the difficult aspects of complete denture prosthodontics is the selection of appropriately sized maxillary anterior teeth. Many attempts have been made to establish methods of estimating the width of maxillary incisors. This study was conducted to determine the relationship between the mesiodistal width of maxillary incisors and the width of the mouth, interalar width, bizygomatic width and intercanthal distance. Eighty four dental students were included in this study. Width of the mouth, interalar width, bizygomatic width and intercanthal distance were measured by a divider and a digital caliper. The mean widths of the 2 central incisors and the combined width of the 6 anterior teeth were determined intraorally at their widest dimension. ANOVA test, Regression analysis and Pearson correlation coefficients were used for statistical analyses. All the variables means were higher in the men than in the women. There was a significant relation between the mean values of the mesiodistal width of upper anterior six teeth with the width of mouth, interalar width and bizygomatic width. There was a significant relation between the mean value of the width of 2 central incisors with the all maxillary incisors width and interalar distance.

Resumen: Uno de los aspectos más difíciles en la fabricación de dentaduras completas postizas es la selección del tamaño apropiado de los dientes maxilares anteriores. Se han hecho algunos intentos para establecer métodos que permitan estimar la anchura de los incisivos maxilares. Este estudio se encamino hacia determinar la relación entre el ancho mesio-distal de los incisivos maxilares y el ancho de la boca, ancho interalar, ancho bicigomático y distancia intercantal. Ochenta y cuatro estudiantes de odontología fueron usados en este estudio. Todas las medidas fueron tomadas con un divisor y un calibrador digital. La media de anchura de los 2 incisivos centrales y la anchura combinada de los 6 dientes anteriores se determinaron intraoralmente. Para el análisis estadístico se usó test de ANOVA, análisis de regresión y coeficiente de correlación de Pearson. Todas las variables medidas expresaron valores mayores en hombres que en mujeres. Se encontró una relación significativa entre los valores medios del ancho mesio-distal en los 6 dientes anteriores superiores y el ancho de la boca, ancho interalar y ancho bicigomático. También se encontró una relación significativa entre los valores medios del ancho de los incisivos centrales y el ancho de todos los incisivos maxilares y la distancia interalar.
