Areca nut Chewing induces Dental attrition and sensitivity.

Abstract: Very little is known about the role of chewing of tobacco
and areca nut on the oral dental hard tissues. An attempt was made to
observe the effects of these materials on dental hard tissues. A total
of 365 subjects (168 chewers and 197 non chewers) were enrolled randomly.
The chewers were addicted to different chewing preparations. Examination
of teeth was carried out clinically and dental attrition and staining
were observed. The results indicated significantly higher frequency of
dental attrition, sensitivity and staining of teeth among chewers than
non-chewers. Further, analysis of data indicated a significantly higher
attrition score for molar and anterior teeth among chewers with respect
to non-chewers. The attrition score was also higher for premolar but
this was not statistically significant with respect to non-chewers. The
chewing these materials also leads to staining of teeth, which was also
significantly higher among chewers. Chewing areca nut and tobacco have
the adverse effect on dentine structure and function as more dentine
attrition and sensitivity was observed among chewers than non-chewers.

Resumen: Muy poco es lo que se conoce del rol de mascar tabaco y
nuez areca en los tejidos duros de la boca. Se realizó una aproximación
para observar los efectos de estos materiales sobre los tejidos dentales
más duros. Un total de 365 individuos (168 masticadores y 197 no
masticadores) fueron seleccionados aleatoriamente. Los masticadores eran
adictos a diferentes preparaciones de mascado. La observación de los
dientes fue clínica para observar la atrición. Los resultados indican
una frecuencia altamente significativa de atrición dental, sensibilidad
y manchado de dientes entre masticadores. Adicionalmente, el análisis de
los datos indica una atrición altamente significativa para molares y
dientes anteriores entre masticadores con respecto a los no
masticadores. El registro de la atrición fue también muy alto en
premolares pero no presentó diferencias significativas con respecto a
los no masticadores. El masticamiento de estos materiales también
contribuye al manchado de los dientes. El mascado de tabaco y nuez areca
tiene un efecto adverso sobre la estructura y función de la dentina
provocando mayor atrición en la dentina y sensibilidad en los
masticadores.
